Day Seventeen - Life Amongst the Oil Men

Since today was a short day (36 miles to Sonora, TX), we slept in till 6 am and spent 2 hours patching tubes and changing flats. We were on the road by 10 am and took a secondary road the whole way (our first day completely off the highway). It was beautiful - sunny, 70's to 90's, constant rolling hills, and trees. Robin didn't enjoy the headwinds and the climbs! No dead animals to report today, but we did get to see a turkey take off and fly. We also saw a number of vultures, cattle, sheep and goats.

Once in Sonora, we did laundry, enjoyed the pool, and patched more tubes. Our flat count is now at 23 (we have stopped reporting this on a daily basis as it has become part of the normal routine for us).

The story behind today's title is that both Ozona and Sonora are full of oil men. Some of the hotels have put in three double beds per room and two men per bed. The boom here has been going on for at least three years now and noone sees it ending. The work is hard, but the pay is spectacular! They can't find enough workers, in fact we were both offered jobs today. It's an interesting place with white pickup trucks everywhere.

Thanks so much to all of you who have given to Destiny Rescue. We are amazed and grateful everyday as we watch the total climb closer to our goal, knowing that children trapped in a nightmare of enslavement in the sex trade will be rescued!

Also, love reading comments on the blog, just haven't figured out how to respond to them? Know that we read them and are very encouraged by them!

  1. Hello R2 (Rick & Robin), congrats on passing the 1000 mile mark. We love the great pix's. Toni and I are still amazed at the whole ride u 2 r doing. We started walking 1000 miles 3 months ago and are up to 250 miles. No flats- just a little plantar fasciitis :) Haven't missed a day yet ourselves on our walking goal but your effort is Herculean! We r so proud of the ride and look forward to the daily updates. The weather back here finally turned a little bit cold and wet. Everyone is back in school and yellow buses are everywhere. The Browns,, of course blew the home opener in the last minutes and thus, life is pretty normal back on the home front. We miss you guys- be safe and see you in a month. God bless, M&T
