Day Sixteen - Oil Fields, Wind Farms and Hill Country

We left Fort Stockton while it was still dark and cool. Gerry, who helped us out yesterday, set us up to meet his friend Houston who had a couple inner tubes for us, 20 miles east. As per the plan, we called Houston when we got to a certain exit. It was all we could do to keep from saying "Houston we have a problem!". He was waiting for us at the next exit with tubes and a patch kit.

We rode on through miles of oil fields and plateau after plateau covered with wind turbines. The last 30 miles made it very obvious that we had hit the Texas hill country. Heat has returned to TX as we saw 112 degrees today! It took ALL day, but we made the 105 miles to Ozona, TX.

We added a red fox, an elk and a turkey to our road-kill list.

Yesterday we forgot to report that we went over 1,000 miles for the trip this far!

  1. Way to go, you guys! Can't imagine pedalling up and down hills in that heat. I would think the heat has a lot to do with the flats, too. Your blog I am afraid has straightened out my image of you getting up at 8 every day for a leisurely pedal. Continued good luck! Don Long

  4. Your saga is quite inspiring! I stopped in to check your progress, and now I’m hooked. Your updates present a slice of life too often missed in our hectic, uncaring world. The two of you are truly making a difference. Godspeed, and God bless, Bruce Moore
